I personally wanted to use a text type that was old fashioned and closer to the originals font type and went with a font Cabazon available on Adobe Illustrator. In the chart above it’s clear to see the slight development and alterations made to the font, from the harsh angled and jagged looking lines in Textur to the smoother and flowing adaptation of Schwabachar. The type originated all the way back to the mid 12th Century, with slight variations appearing throughout art and manuscripts. The type is largely popular and characterised for it’s dramatic thin and thick lines or strokes and in some more calligraphy like adaptations, exaggerated patterns, swirls and even flower like decorative elements. The font type, referred to Blackletter typeface, Old English font and Gothic font is one that was first included in the Guthenburg Bible (also known as the 42 line bible) was one of the first books historically printing throughout Europe. However the history of this font is deeply rooted in European culture- juxtaposing my subject of Afro-Hair Styles. The type font has a strong (thick) and bold line use which makes it seem more serious and when used for adding titles to my illustrations stands out mores than the everyday fonts such as Times New Roman and Microsoft Sans. The final font I went for was the Gothic font, originating in Medieval France I found the font to be not only decorative and bold but also mimicking that of some modern day tattoos which are often associated with black and largely minority prisons.
